Well, this week i had cat drama. Here's how it went down:
This weekend, I noticed that Lilith (who is my little girl, just over a year old) was spending an awful lot of time in the litter box. She's always loved puttering around in the litter box, but now she was just squatting with this frustrated look on her little face. It was odd, and I started keeping a closer eye on her. She was acting normally, so i let it be for a bit.
Tuesday night, i noticed dirt spilled out of one of the ficus trees in the living room. This was unusual, as the cats generally leave that plant alone. And Wednesday morning, I saw Lilith squatting in the plant as i was getting ready for work. I got her out of the plant, and she immediately ran over to the kitchen throw rug and squatted there.
And, of course, I think omigawd, she has FUS. So i shut her in the bathroom with a litter box and call the vet, who tells me to bring her in at 10:30. So at 10, I box her up and we start out for the vet, which is a bit less than a mile away. She's cursing at me in cat the entire time, no doubt in part because she has to pee and refuses to do it in the box. I didn't know she could make those kinds of noises.
So I take her in to the vet, who is a very nice man who I hadn't met before (the regular vet is on vacation). He listens to me talk about what's wrong with her, and then we get her out and examine her. She was surprisingly good for the vet; she's always fiesty, so it came as a surprise to me that she let herself be handled in undignified positions. They needed a urine sample, so I needed to leave her there all day.
They got their urine sample about 5 pm and called me to come pick her up. She has cystitis, which is an inflammation of the bladder and not FUS at all. It happens in high-strung cats and sometimes just randomly in laid-back cats. She's on medication now, and has turned out to be a good paitent. She takes pills like a pro. I wrap her up in a blanket, open her mouth, drop in the pill, and close her mouth; she then swallows and then meows for her treat, which she knows she gets right after her pills.
So all is well now, and the cats are taking turns sleeping in the cat carrier which i haven't bothered to bring downstairs yet. Maybe I'll take the door off the other one and turn it into a cat den.
